Straight out of Lincoln, Nebraska… The Killigans have consistently turned out releases that have turned heads, and made all of us in the Folk-Punk/ Paddy Punk community keep asking for more. Having worked with the Killigans since their Demo song of “Through the Flames” was on our first compilation in 2005… then in 2006 they released “Brown Bottle Hymnal” , next in 2007 “One Step Ahead of Hell”, in 2008 they released a live album “Live at The Zoo Bar”, and now a new release “Honor” is here. Every studio release The Killigans have put out since they began as a band in 2004 have been just simply the best independent releases I’ve ever heard here at Paddy Rock in Folk Punk… both musically and lyrically…. it just amazes me that they are not signed and haven’t blown up yet not only nationally but internationally.
“Honor” captures The Killigans at the top of their game… from the smokin’ first track ‘Martyrs of the Lower Middle Class’ to the anthem ‘New Revolution’, or even the closing last call for kick ass music track ‘Liquor Store’. The best way to describe The Killigans sound would be if you took Filthy Thieving Bastards, Flogging Molly, and The Street Dogs in a blender… toss in a fifth of whiskey and blend!!!
I recommend these guys to everyone whom asks me who I like the best in this style of music… I recommend you buy all their albums.. you won’t be dissappointed.

Black Irish Texas
“To Hell With The King”

A few years ago I received a few tracks from this group and the sound black_irishwas rough about the edges and was making sparks in the Celtic Rock community. Today, I received their debut “To Hell With The King” in my mailbox and this little spark has turned into a fire of burnin’ Punk-a-Celtic-a-Billy musical majestic. After touring for years with the likes of the Street Dogs, Dropkick Murphys, The Dicks, and more… Black Irish Texas’ latest “To Hell With The King” captures the band at the top of their game with great versions of ‘Rocky Road To Dublin’, ‘Come Out Ye Black and Tans’, and a bunch of amazing barn burnin originals like the opening track ‘Get Em Off’, the title track ‘To Hell With The King’, and  ‘Sisters Jenny’s Turn’ that will have your foot stomping and dancing around the room while drinking some good ole Irish whiskey from the jar.

I recommend this album to all of you whom enjoy the sounds of the Wages of Sin, The Killigans, and The Pogues with a little Rockabilly mixed in.

It has been a few years since I’ve received any music from these bunch of Glascow hooligans bringing the Irish Folk n Roll. I didn’t know what to expect from The Wakes this time around, since their last album “These Hands” was alright… and not much more than that. Today, I stop home from a cold day here in the city of Chicago from a hard day at work and I popped their latest release “No Irish Need Apply” in my

wakes

stereo. “No Irish Need Apply” is a fucking masterpiece! The Wakes are spot on from their amazing originals like “Southside Paddy’s”, “Save A Piece Of The Island For Me”,  “James Connolly’s Ghost”, “Pirates of The League”, and “No Irish Need Apply” to their versions of  “St. Patrick’s Battalion” and “Free The People”.

Usually it takes a bit of time in letting all of you fan’s of Celtic Rock and Punk know about what albums deserve to be reviewed on Paddy Rock because the music has to sink in and maybe change my mind on if I feel the album has enough tracks on it to be BUY worthy, however it just took me one hour of listening to write this review.  “No Irish Need Apply” is where it’s at in Irish Folk Rock… from ballads to Rockin tracks… it has a song for whatever mood you may be in… let alone to sing along with at your local pub… in your living room… or even just in your car!

Cheers to The WAKES for this one!

Live… What’s It To Ya?! by Wild Colonial Bhoys»

Loud Folk Records

For those of you fine people whom have seen this St. Paul, Minnesota Celtic Rock band Wild Colonial Bhoy perform live on stage… you already know how they captivate the crowd with their near perfect studio ready sound, original arrangements, and charisma. WIld Colonial Bhoys consist of Front man Adam Coolong vocals and guitar, Geno Carlson on guitars and vocals, Cody McKinney on bass and vocals, and on this disc Tony Comeau on fiddle, and Pete Hennig on drums. Now… this lineup tends to change based upon whom is brought together on stage… however Adam, Geno, and Cody are the core members to this Celtic Rock Kick Assery Assemble. Unlike many of the “Live” CD’s that I have received over the years in Celtic Rock & Punk… this CD is almost a best of Celtic Rock of WCB’s originals like “Hair of the Dog”, “I Am Ireland”, “Better Off”, and more… but they have some great covers of Spirit of the West’s “Home For A Rest”, Steve Earle’s “Galway Girl”, Charlie and the Bhoys’ “Charlie and the MTA”, and some killer versions of everyone’s favorite staple pub songs of “Wild Rover”, “Come Out Ye Black and Tans”, and more! It’s one hell of a set list here my friends… great if you are looking to have a Celtic Rockin St. Pat’s party at your pub, house, or where ever you may be. “Live… What’s It To Ya?!” is a recording capturing some high powered, smack you in the face with some great musicianship… you know… Wild Colonial Bhoys in their element! Pick this one up for sure and go see them live at a city near you… you won’t be disappointed.

Hooligans And Saints by Charm City Saints»

Charm City Saints
“Hooligans and Saints”
Size Ten Records
Click here to buy this release

Straight from Baltimore, Maryland… comes one of the best Celt-Punk bands in the nation with their own original hard nose style of hardcore punk and traditional Irish instrumentation throughout.  I’m more partial to their originals like the tracks “Adrift”, “Times Like These”, “Charm City Saints”, “Never Go Home Again” and “Bars & Scars”… but their versions of “Dicey Riley”, “Black And Tans”, “Atholl Highlanders”, and “Night Pat Murphy Died” are strong as well. “Hooligans And Saints” is for the Celt-Punk fan that is looking for something more raw… up front… and working class… and not some wannabe Flogging Molly cover band or the polished sounds of a new CD from the Dropkick Murphys.
