The Porters
The Porters
"Anywhere But Home"
Knock Out Records

Germany's amazing Porters have a new CD out with some of the best Celt-Punk on it... staying true to their Great Irish Punk Pissup sound. The first time I had ever heard of thiscrazy ass bunch of hooligans was from my good friend John Murphy from Shite N' Onions back with their previous release "A Tribute To Arthur Guinness" in 2001. After lineup changes their sound has just grown into one of the best damn sounds around. The snarling vocals of Volker is so MacGowan-like while spitting out every word to the grinding Guitar work of Martin, smashing and crashing percussion by Gehrke, melodic Accordian/Concertina by Chris, and bringing the backbone on Bass with Judy. Unlike past recordings this "Anywhere But Home" is chalk full of original tunes that blow away anything they have ever put out. The only two covers "Fiesta" and "Cheating At Solitaire" which both are done almost in my opinion better than the previous recordings with their own feel and touch that The Porters can only bring. The Porters are the real deal and "Anywhere But Home" is a recording that will stand the test of time in my collection til I die.

If you like Dropkick Murphys, Mr. Irish Bastard, Greenland Whalefishers, and especially The Pogues... pick up this disc right now... it will change your life.

The Prodigals
The Prodigals
"Momentum"
Dara Records

The New York based Prodigals have been pumping out great Celtic Rock albums since 1998.... and they are back again with yet another amazing CD with "Momentum". Front man Gregory Grene incorporates powerful vocals and that added touch of accordion that drives these jigs and original songs into your head and will have you singing and dancing in no time. The guest performances of Joanie Madden on Tin Whistle & Flute... and other great musicians also made the experience more enjoyable with every listen. I could not find one bad song on "Momentum"... and I've only admitted this a handful of times in the past ten years of writing reviews on Celtic Rock.

If you enjoy the sounds of the Young Dubliners, The Elders, The Sandcarvers, Black 47, and Enter The Haggis... you will love this disc... so if you haven't picked it up yet... you better, or you'll be missing out on one of the best CD's to come out in 2005!

The Sandcarvers
The Sandcarvers
"Dealin' Craic"
Green Sand Musik

"Dealin' Craic" is one of the best overall discs I received at the begining of 2006. This release is chalked full of traditional and original songs that makes for a SURE THING in our Top 20 CD's for 2006 with it's amazing vocals, masterful musicianship, and catchy song writing on this solid Celtic Rock release of 2006. If you are looking for a good representation of where Celtic Rock is heading, "Dealin' Crack" will have you hooked the second you start playing it in your car, home, or even on the jukebox of your local pub!

You will like this disc if you like the sounds of the Young Dubliners, The Elders, and the Saw Doctors.

Tracks of interest: "Tullamore Dew", "Carrickfergus", "Miles Ahead, Miles Behind", and of course the whole disc!

Sharky Doyles
Sharky Doyles
"Back of the Yards"

Self-Released

Chicago has now become one of the riched cities in bringing some of the best Celtic Punk & Rock with bands like the Tossers, Flatfoot 56, and of course the Sharky Doyles. On their latest CD, "Back of the Yards" which is getting many requests on Paddy Rock Radio, you hear an amazing improvement from past recordings. With some hardcore/punked out traditional Irish tunes like "Boys of the Old Brigade", "Dirty Old Town", "Broad Black Brimmer", & "Back of the Yards"... where can you go wrong. Although a bit rough around the edges on the vocals... I recommend the "Back of the Yards" disc to all of you hooligans that like working class celtic punk like DKM and send you on your way to Drink, Fight, & .... well you know what I mean.

Shite N Onions Vol 2
John Murphy has outdone himself yet again with this compilation. SNO Vol 2 has great artists as heard right here on PRR like Blaggards, Jackdaw, Sharky Doyles, The Kissers, The Peelers, The Gobshites, Icewagon Flu, The Pubcrawlers, The Go Set, Larkin, and The Porters.... mixed with some new comers to us with Jug O Punch, Three Day Threshold, Warblefly, and McGillicuddys and more. This 20 track disc is full of great high powered drinking tunes that will get you introduced to some of the artists that are making a buzz now on the international Celtic Rock & Punk music scene! If there is only one thing that I think lacks from the previous release would be some of the artists that I think kicked major ass... such as Neck, The Mahones, The Skels, The Electrics, The Tossers, Blood or Whiskey, and Greenland Whalefishers. I will give him shit for not getting more Chicago based bands on there also, but I know how hard it is to put one of these things together. I've always found that John tends to have that knack to bring the music to the people! Why hasn't he started his own lable for this great Celtic Rock & Punk? I will never know.

Siochain

Siochain
"Disturbing the Peace"
Self-released

Siochain is an amazing Celtic Rock band from Indianapolis, Indiana. They captivate the audience live... and on "Disturbing The Piece" you will have it turned up to 11 as you knock over everything in your house while you're dancing your favorite drunken jig. Great rock guitar and pipe work by Rufus Cambell mixed with the masterful fiddle and mandolin work of Nathan Klatt provide that explosive sound that is driven through with Claudia's vocal work and a strong backbone of Cory Carleton on bass and Brian Meyers on drums. The music is exciting.... from trad tunes like "Broad Black Brimmer" to insturmentals like "Lannigan's Ball"... it will have you coming back for more. I play this in my house, my car, and even force them to play it at some pubs while I'm kicking back a couple pints.

Pick this disc up... you won't be disappointed.

Slide Show Baby

Slide Show Baby
"Slide Show Baby"
Moriath Records

Celtic Rock Fusion from Nashville, Tennessee that is radio ready and is taking it to a whole new level. “Slideshow Baby” produces a mash of the most studio perfect mix of Pop-Rock/Emo/Punk in the same lines of great bands like Spitalfield, Bayside, and The Starting Line… then fuses in traditional Celtic instrumentations which is best represented by the tracks “Newsflash”, “The Fall Out”, and “Let Go” on this release. There are only a handful of bands that have fused Celtic Rock into other avenues over the most recent years, Enter The Haggis & The Go Set to name a couple, and Slideshow Baby is beginning to take that path to greatness as well. If you are looking for songs pertaining to immigrants coming over to this country to find hard times, crazy times with Irish Whiskey, or even stories about struggles back in the homeland that so many have died over throughout history… you will be disappointed… this is high-energy music made for and written by the youth talking about relationships and other youth related subject matter.

Check out this disc if you enjoy the sounds of Enter The Haggis, The Go Set, and Seven Nations.

Swaggerin' Growlers
Swaggerin' Growlers
"The Bottle and the Bow"
Self-released

Long time Swaggerin Growlers have finally put together a release that lives up to the legends they have become in the Celt-punk underground in the Boston area. This 14 song release is a like the the road journal of a crazy drunkard talking about life experinces, love, friendships, and of course... drinking.... what's not to love there? I think I played this disc non-stop for 24 hours and still couldn't find a bad track on the disc... this is high energy celt-punk with both bite and humor... and my new disc to pre-game before going out to the pub. I can't wait to see these boys live!

If you dig the sounds of The Skels, Vandon Arms, Porters, or even early Dropkick Murphys... you'll love this disc!

Switchback
Switchback
"Bolinree"
Waygood Records

"Bolinree" is a fine representation of great acoustic Celtic folk/rock with Martin McCormack providing the backbone on bass and vocals and Brian Fitzgerald's masterfully talents on the mandolin, classical guitar and vocals. "Bolinree" is yet another release from this great Midwestern band with "Celtic Soul and American Roots" that has caught our attention at Paddy Rock Radio. Like capturing lightning in a bottle, Switchback's latest release "Bolinree" brings you closer to the true sounds of Ireland as they were meant to be heard played to today’s standards from such great musicians. If you enjoy the sounds of the folk-rockers Bodeans mixed with the upbeat jigs of the Popes, and a dash of the traditional sounds of the Cheiftains... this disc is a must have to your collection.
