Amadan

Amadan
"Pacifica"
Self-Released

Straight from the Pacific Northwest, Amadan has been a band that is beginning to change the way we look at Celtic music as we know it today... and where it's heading for the future. Throwing Celtic music in a blender with rock, punk, folk, and other forms can be an extremely risky choice for some bands since it puts them in an unmarketable position by many "genre" labelers in the industry... however Amadan is a band of musicians that have mastered their original sound enough to make themselves more marketable. Following up their amazing 2004 release with "Hell-Bent 4 Victory!" was thought by myself and others in the Celtic Rock community to be an impossibility... to my surprise "Pacifica" has taken them to the next level and even closer to the top of the list of the best bands in Celt-Fusion around the world. You will be seeing this CD on our Top CD's Of The Year for 2007... listen to it and you will know why.

Pick this disc up if you enjoy the sounds of Enter The Haggis, Fiddler's Green, and The Young Dubliners.

The American Wake
The American Wake
"Tell No Tales"
Self Released

Cali based American Wake has put together one hell of a Celtic Rock release here with "Tell No Tales". Eric Ree's powerful vocals, Robert Keysers playing jigs and reels on his fiddle like a crazy bastard of a genius, Hatt & Murray providing the backbone with beats and the link that holds this boat together... Frank LaBlanc with his strong musicianship and lyrics keeps me captivated for hours on end.
It's the sailors life for these five young lads of Celtic Rock... or at least the songs hold true with great tales life at sea. Imagine if you threw the Young Dubliners, Great Big Sea, and a dash of The Prodigals into a large blender... what would you get? Other than a bloody shamrock shake... you would have one hell of an explosive Celtic Rock band.

Tracks of interest: "The Drinking Jolly Roger", "Passing By", "She swears Like A Sailor", and "What Did The Deep Seas Say". Pick this one up today... or the PRR drinking team will make you walk the plank!

The Barley Boys
The Barley Boys
"The Days of Abundance"
Self-released

Going from one amazing disc to the next... The Barley Boys have another gem in the rough here with "The Days of Abundance"!
This CD is full of great Celt-Rock/Folk versions of both trad songs (Follow Me Up To Carlow, Scolding Wife, and Star of The County Down) and original tunes written by song-writing mastermind Michael Babick (Maggie, Farwell to England, and my personal favorite Good Friday). These are well crafted songs done by amazing musician... "The Days of Abundance" and "It's A Long Drive From Ireland!" should make it into your collection very soon... fun for the whole drunkin' family!
The Barley Boys
"It's A Long Drive From Ireland!"
Self-released

The Barley Boys came across my desk here at PRR studios... and it's made me want to go out and celebrate ever since. "It's A Long Drive From Ireland!" is a fun disc of witt, humor, and some great songs to kick off your St. Patrick's Day party right! This is a great mix of traditional and original tracks.... this is some of the true Pub music you want to hear to brighten up your day and make you want to sing along with glass in hand! I am still cracking up from "I’m Sorry Honey" and "Too Drunk Polka" both of which have that humor that we can all understand. Fun overall CD.... worth the money... andmakes me wonder what they have to come next.

If you enjoy the sounds of Barleyjuice, The Fenians, or Brace Yourself Bridget... you will love this disc.
Barleyjuice
Barleyjuice
"Six Yanks"
Ryf Records

The boys of Barleyjuice have done it again! "Six Yanks" is a solid Celtic Rock release with amazing originals and traditionals done in a way that only Kyf, Swanny and the boys can do. Tracks of interest are "Modern Pirates" Great traditional tune with a touch of Rocky Road for good measure, "Love With A Priest" a unique, yet great, Guinness tune, "Whiskey-Bailey's-Guinness" the theme of John Bowles, and my personal favorite on the disc "Tartan Is The Colour Of My True Love's Hair". If every pub in the U.S. hasn't caught on to these boys yet... then they are blind, deaf, and struck dumb by a 2x4 to the head at the age of 10... just pick up the disc and take a Guinness soaked ride down the road of Barley Juice.

Barleyjuice
"Another Round"
Ryf Records

The PA band Barley Juice can be best described as one of the finest in pub rock bands with some of the best sounding bunch of drunks at the helm. Caution... "Another Round" may cause instant addiction and consumption of far too many pints as I did when I sang along to this well constructed LP. The talents of the band as a whole are amazing, however Kyf Brewer's talents on Guitar, Accordion, Bodhran, Piano, and his whiskey-soaked voice is the stand-out on this Release. Kyf sings through some of our favorite traditional (I'll Tell Me Ma, Take Her Up to Monto, Whiskey in the Jar, and Moonshiner) and some of the best damn original tunes (Potatoes, What's Up Yours? & Dear Richard's Wake) I've heard come across my ear in a long while. If you like music that will have you dancing, singing, and drinking far to many pints along with this great pub rock that we love so well.... pick this release up now and raise your pint to the talents of Barley Juice ya tossers!

Biblecode Sundays

Biblecode Sundays
"Ghosts Of Our Pasts"
Self-Released

Biblecode Sundays would be best summed up as a Celtic Rock smoothie that takes one part Prodigals, one part Gaelic Storm, and a dash of Great Big Sea. These boys can not only play some great jigs and reels, but their song-writing is original and they catchy as hell!
The only problem I have come across… is how the hell are we going to get them over here in the US to play a show?

Tracks of interest: “Ghosts Of Our Pasts”, “Whitey”, “Mary Of the Northholt Road”, and my favorite of the disc “McBratney from the Kitchen”.

Blaggards
Blaggards
"Standards"
NFA Recordings

When the Blaggards contacted us about getting their music on our show we thought that it was just another celtic rock band that we would just play once and have our growling audience tell us to never play again.
Since we received this disc, not only were we extremely wrong, but since we played one track on our show the request lines exploded.
"Standards" is as it says in the name... these are the standards for most Celtic oriented bands to play on stage with tracks like "Drunken Sailor", "Botany Bay", "Irish Rover", however the Blaggards have delivered them in a way that smacks you in the face and has you asking for more! IT's almost as if we were meant to have met Blaggards since this the one band that puts the ROCK in Celtic Rock! Although it's hard to find a standout track on this excellent LP the most requested track would have to be the happily named "Prison Love Songs" which is an excellent mix of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" and the traditional "The Fields of Athenry".
Patrick Devlin's growling vocals and grinding guitar, Brian Vogel's crashing and smashing on the drums, Chad Smalley's great vocal harmony and bass work, and one of the best damn violin playing I've heard on a independent release from Turi Hoiseth just compliment each other tremendously on this disc.
If you want a disc that makes Flogging Molly look like a bunch of nancy boys... then you want to check out the Blaggards.

Box Of Crayons

Box of Crayons
"St. Paddys Day Massacre"
Self-Released

Straight out of New York... Box Of Crayons have put together yet another disc of pub-rockin' Celtic music that you would hear coming pouring out of any public house with all the other drunks singin' along. "St. Paddy's Day Massacre" is a rough recording capturing select times that the band must have got together after a couple tall boys and laid down to tracks... it's funny, it's surprisingly contagious, and will get you in the mood to get your arse out to the bar.

Tracks of interest: "Keep It Up To The Brim", "5 Drunken Nights", and the "Rose of Tralee".

Cairde Na Gael

Cairde Na Gael
"Cairde Na Gael"
Self-Released

Although we mostly play more upbeat Celtic Rock & Punk... it's great to play a track or two of the traditional stuff if it's played the way it should be. Cairde Na Gael is one hell of a traditional Irish band with great musicians playing this great traditional music! If you dig the Wolfe Tones, Dubliners, and even the Chieftains with a added touch of Oklahoma flavor.... you will love this disc.
I say pick it up today if you want to get in touch with your roots... but don't touch it that much... or you might go blind... ok I lost track of thought there for a second... lol... Just pick up the damn record for a good listen.

Ceili Moss

Ceili Moss
"On The Shore"
Self-Released

This is Acoustic-Celt with some of the best instrumentals, traditional arrangements, and original tunes I've come across in a long while with accordion, fiddle, keyboards, flute, tin whistle, guitar and drums. If you took Gaelic Storm and The Glengarry Bhoys and put them in a blender... you'd have a drink made in Dhuy, Belgium that would go down smooth that never leaves a bad taste in your mouth and call it Ceili Moss. Although Celili Law tends to come off more of a Acoustic-Celt band that plays from time to time Celtic-Rock.... this band of eight's strength is both their original sound and materful instrumentation on their release "On The Shore".
Ceili Moss has a knack of making great music that would find a home in almost any pub. I do feel that when some call them "The Belgium Pogues"... I laugh, because if you could keep the Pogues sober enough to make music like this.... then maybe... but I say that Ceili Moss is one fine Acoustic-Celt upbeat Trad. band with some of the best musicians from Belgium all in one group.

Highlights on this disc would have to be "E411", "Miss Walsh's Fancy/Be Easy Rogue" both amazing instrumentals, and a well crafted original track within "Emerald".

If you're interested in The Glengarry Bhoys, early Gaelic Storm, or just some good Trad. to add to your collection... "On The Shore" will be a good disc to pick up.

Charm City Saints
Charm City Saints
"Never Go Home Again" - EP
Workers United Records

When I heard that a fine Celt-Punk band from Maryland had some ex-members of the underground legends The Mobtown Hooligans... I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt and take a listen. Not only did The Charm City Saints smack me in the face with their explosive raw energy, but they gave me faith in the next generation of Celt-Punk from the East Coast. Jesse's snarling vocals, Damon's thunderous percussion, Ayres' and Kevin's shredding guitar work, and Patrick's pounding bass all tie in together with the masterful work by Piper Mike's highland bagpipe and Jeff's talents on whistle/fiddle/bodhran on "Never Go Home Again". The only thing lacking on this disc is more music! I can't wait to see what they come out with next... until then... buy this CD or may you get hit by a bus load of nuns.

Pick up this disc if you like the Dropkick Murphys, Flatfoot 56, The Sharky Doyles, or anything else that kicks ass!

T. Duggins
T. Duggins
"Undone"
Thick Records

I've been captivated by musicians on stage playing amazing music with power and emotion at a pub many times and wished I had a way to record it so I could play it over and over again. Tony Duggins, front man for Chicago Celtic rocker's The Tossers, has captured this amazing sound all on one disc with "Undone". Mostly recorded live, this solo disc has renditions of tunes by other great singer/songwriters like Dylan, Leadbelly, MacGowen, Moore and McCall plus a few traditionals... all done in a raw and unpolished style to perfection by a true musician found within T. Duggins.
Even though this disc is solid with great music... the only draw back for me would have to be that with such great talent... why only three originals? I guess I ask that to myself every time I'm up at the pub listening to that great musician play their ass off.... and some asshole screams "...play Freebird". Maybe I'm just selfish.

Pick up this disc if your into Christy Moore, Shane MacGowan, and especially if you know Tony Duggins as a poet, musician, and a man you don't meet everyday.

Tracks of interest are: "Monto" (Traditional), "Goodnight Irene" (Leadbelly), "Shoals of Herring" (MacColl), and possibly one of the best written original tune on the disc "Childrens Potential".

The Elders

The Elders
"Racing The Tide"
Self-Released

"Racing The Tide" proves to me that The Elders have yet to produce a CD that has not been anything but excellent.
Great melodies, harmonies, musicianship, and song writing.... these are songs to dance to, drink to, sing along with, and remember for years to come. The Elders are on a short list of great Celtic-Rock acts from around the world that I would speak proudly of. Just pick up this disc or I'll beat you about the head with a very big stick.

This is for all of you who like the likes of Gaelic Storm, Young Dubliners, The Prodigals, Saw Doctors, or The Sandcarvers.

The Emerald Diamond - Music From the Motion Picture

The Emerald Diamond
Motion Picture Soundtrack

I heard about this movie on the community site myspace.com. A 90-minute documentary about the Irish National Baseball Team on a budget of $70,000 (Which was financed on credit cards) by first-time filmmaker John Fitzgerald. Being in radio/video production throughout my youth I found this to be one hell of an idea. However... to make for a great documentary or movie... the soundtrack has to be excellent to set the mood and to bring it home.
John Fitzgerald has put together one hell of a soundtrack here of some great Celtic Traditional/Rock/Punk bands.
These are all great songs from great Celtic acts like Neck, Shilelagh Law, Charm City Saints, Icewagon Flu, Whiskey On A Sunday, and many more. This cd will get you in the mood for drinks... in the mood for fun... in the mood for baseball!
I can't wait to hear Whiskey On A Sunday's version of Take Me Out To The Ballgame at the next game I goto.

Pick this one up kids... it's a great mix of Celtic tunes... soon to be a hit. OK... that was corny... but I loved it.
Enter The Haggis

Enter The Haggis
"Soapbox Heroes"
UFO

You can't pigeon hole Enter The Haggis into any one genre... whether it be World, Celtic, Rock, or even Indie!
So here is the best way I can describe their music.
Enter The Haggis is a band that is made up of the most talented musicians I've heard in one band to date... it's like throwing a bunch of All-Star players from different sports into an arena and giving them no directions other than telling them to play. "Soapbox Heroes" has a sound like no other release that I have had in my ears... amazing four-part harmonies, grinding guitars, thunderous drums & percussion, melodic and almost hypnotic sounds from bagpipe, mandolin, piano, and fiddle. Enter The Haggis is a melting pot of everything this is good in music and any listener can walk away with something they could enjoy from this disc.
